Just seven days ago, Gap launched a new logo on their website, Gap.com, and instantly received a backlash from the online community on social media websites like Twitter and Facebook. Professional logo designers came out in force, discussing the new Gap logo with the vast majority in agreement that the new identity fails on many levels.

Here on the Brian Joseph Studios’ blog, we were one of the first to realize the logo change on Gap.com and posted about the new Gap logo here.

Just a few hours ago on this Monday evening, Gap published a statement on their website announcing their decision to revert back to their iconic logo. Even more impressive, and to the delight of professional designers around the world, they also used this statement to somewhat apologize for their mistake in attempting to use crowdsourcing for the further development of their brand. Crowdsourcing design is an unprofessional way to go about acquiring design work as it results in amateur (and some professional) designers working for free in the hope that their creations will be the chosen one, and ultimately only one designer gets paid.

Gap quickly realized that their decision to entertain the crowdsourcing idea was a harmful one to the Gap brand, and they recognized this in their statement this evening.

“Since we rolled out an updated version of our logo last week on our website, we’ve seen an outpouring of comments from customers and the online community in support of the iconic blue box logo.

Last week, we moved to address the feedback and began exploring how we could tap into all of the passion. Ultimately, we’ve learned just how much energy there is around our brand. All roads were leading us back to the blue box, so we’ve made the decision not to use the new logo on gap.com any further.

At Gap brand, our customers have always come first. We’ve been listening to and watching all of the comments this past week. We heard them say over and over again they are passionate about our blue box logo, and they want it back. So we’ve made the decision to do just that – we will bring it back across all channels.

In the meantime, the website will go back to our iconic blue box logo and, for Holiday, we’ll turn our blue box red for our seasonal campaign.

We’ve learned a lot in this process. And we are clear that we did not go about this in the right way. We recognize that we missed the opportunity to engage with the online community.  This wasn’t the right project at the right time for crowd sourcing.

There may be a time to evolve our logo, but if and when that time comes, we’ll handle it in a different way.”

Congratulations to Gap and their team for listening to the masses online, and for making a decision that will ultimately allow the Gap brand to grow and evolve into an even more successful identity.Recent Posts:

We stumbled upon this really creative and extremely well produced video courtesy of Patrick Jean, entitled “Pixels”, that we thought we would share it with you.

Our favorite part is probably the giant game of tetris taking place as the pieces change the New York skyline.

The Florida Everblades organization teamed up with “Toys for Tots” and asked everyone coming to the game to bring a stuffed toy animal to donate to the “Toys for Tots” charity. The plan was for everyone to throw their toy animals onto the ice when the Everblades scored their first goal. Unfortunately, as the end of the 2nd period was nearing, the Everblades were still without a goal, even though they came very close several times.

With about just over a minute left in the second period, it looked like the Everblades had scored, but the puck hit the post and flew across the goal mouth. Several fans in the crowd thought a goal was scored, and started to throw their toys onto the ice. The announcer amusingly instructed everyone “Do not throw your toys yet! They did not score a goal” as hundreds of stuffed toys began to flood the ice. The crowd didn’t take his request to heart, and the onslaught of flying stuffed animals continued, and lasted for at least 20 minutes.

The Florida Everblades players helped volunteers on the ice to collect all of the toys, and play resumed once the ice was clear. It was quite a wonderful sight to see so many people in the Southwest Florida community helping out “Toys for Tots” and the number of stuffed animals donated by the crowd was incredible.

Rssday.org are trying to build awareness of RSS technology and I am adding my support to the project. Many of us in the web design, graphic design and internet marketing business use RSS technology every day. It is important that our industries try to promote it and get it in front of all general internet users.

Q: What is RSS, and what are RSS feeds I keep hearing about?A. Wikipedia explains RSS feeds as:“RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts.[2] An RSS document (which is called a “feed” or “web feed”[3] or “channel”) contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with web sites in an automated manner that can be piped into special programs or filtered displays.[3]RSS content can be read using software called an “RSS reader”, “feed reader” or an “aggregator”, which can be web-based or desktop-based. The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed’s link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. Google came by awebtech.com a few times to find 301 re-directs on all pages of the website, leading the user to a corresponding page on BrianJosephStudios.com

After careful preparation for the switch, one week later, Googlebot is starting to figure it all out. At the time of tpying this post, brianjosephstudios.com is the number 1 result on Google for “Aurora Web Technology”.

So, what does this mean? Well, it means that the Googlebot has figured out that not only has awebtech.com switched over to brianjosephstudios.com, but important words, names and phrases have also made the switch. The words “Aurora Web Technology” do not feature on BrianJosephStudios.com more than 3 or 4 times. So, evidence shows that Google now knows that old phrases that showed awebtech.com in a search results page, should now apply to brianjosephstudios.com

Googlebot hasn’t fully figured this out yet though, as we are still not ranked number 2 and number 3 as we were for awebtech.com for our targeted keywords. We have seen an increase in our rankings however since the initial drop off when the switch first took place.

We will continue to monitor our rankings and the log files to make sure Googlebot understands exactly what is going on here and to get our site ranked number 1 again. I think we still are number one for several of our targeted keywords though.

So, as a potential client, these posts will hopefully show you that we have an expert knowledge of search engine marketing and search engine optimization (SEO), and we are SEO leaders in the Fort Myers, Naples, Estero and Bonita Springs areas.
